On Friday, January 27, the American-British International Association (ABIA), in coordination with the U.S. Embassy and the La Paz Municipal Department of Cultural Affairs, held a fundraising event at the Embassy residence entitled "High Fashion of the Chola Paceña 2012."  Not only did the event feature chola (native women from La Paz) fashion, but it also celebrated the Bolivian Alasita tradition.  The honorary president of ABIA, Liza Creamer, thanked the La Paz community for its participation and support in putting together the event, which raised funds to benefit the San Juan de Dios Rehabilitation and Mental Health Center.

"We see the chola as one of the largest influences in La Paz.  The chola represents an ethnic identity – an elegant woman who distinguishes herself through nothing more than her polleras (traditional dress)," said Mrs. Creamer.

The event attracted more than 300 participants and included eight Paceñas (natives of La Paz) – including Cholita 2011 Virginia Quino -- modeling polleras which will be used in this year's Gran Poder festival.  The fashion show highlighted polleras which incorporate new design and color concepts.  Hats, shawls, blouses, shoes, and jewelry were also on display – all of these items helping to define traditional chola fashion.

The event also included a performance by Charo Carrazas, who interpreted the evolution of traditional Paceña dress through folkloric ballet.
