Expedited/Postponed Appointments

Emergency, Urgent Humanitarian Travel, Business and Studies

Applicants who need to travel to the United States urgently for humanitarian or other emergency reasons should first call the Call Center to schedule an appointment. Follow the instructions for scheduling an appointment.

If the scheduled appointment does not fit your emergency travel needs, you may request an expedited appointment by e-mailing consularlapaz@state.gov  and using the subject line "Evidence for the Special Appointment."

Please note that in order to request an expedited appointment you MUST have had an appointment scheduled through the call center and you should scan documentary evidence of the reason for the expedite appointment request. The call center provides the list of the documents base on the specific case.

The Consular Section considers the following situations examples of those eligible to apply for expedited appointments:

  • Humanitarian cases, including but not limited to travel for emergency medical treatment or to attend to family emergencies (such as death of immediate family members), as well as travel to support immediate family members receiving medical treatment or dealing with these emergencies.
  • Other situations may include responding to summons to appear in U.S. court.
  • In order to qualify for an expedited appointment, the business emergency must be a specific event such as a conference, a meeting, or a training class. Only the individual business traveler may come to the emergency appointment; the family of the traveler cannot be interviewed at that time.
  • Students who must start studies before the interview date schedule by the call center.

Please note that an expedited appointment in no way guarantees that the visa will be granted. Each applicant must qualify for a visa under U.S. Immigration Law. If issued, the visas will be delivered through DHL.
