Joint Infrastructure Works Carried Out by the U.S. Government and the Municipality of Sucre to Benefit 70,000 People

Sucre
On the eve of the anniversary of the first uprising claiming national independence in La Plata, now Sucre, in 1809, U.S. Ambassador Philip Goldberg and Sucre’s Mayor Aideé Nava participated in an inauguration ceremony that delivered 14 basic sanitation systems, built within a mutual cooperation program that will deliver 60 of such systems by the end of 2007 in Sucre. The program will benefit approximately 70,000 people that live in peripheral neighborhoods of the city. The delivery ceremony took place in the neighborhood of El Morro.
For this particular project the Municipality of Sucre invested $878,000 and the U.S. Government invested $295,000 under its Food for Work program, where local residents receive food in exchange for their labor to build infrastructure in their own neighborhoods.
This activity, which aims to protect the health of poor families in Sucre, is part of a larger cooperation program of the U.S. Government in the Department of Chuquisaca, which includes 150 projects in 28 municipalities. Those projects are carried out with the participation of local partners and producers.

This support effort on behalf of the people of Chuquisaca is part of an overall program of U.S. cooperation to Bolivia estimated at more than $110 million per year. This cooperation is provided to create better living conditions for Bolivians, to develop economic opportunities and greater incomes, as well as to support social inclusion and citizen participation processes.
