Embassy Notices

To assist the traveling public, the Bureau of Consular Affairs and the U.S. Embassy issue Country Specific Information, Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, Messages to American Citizens, and Demonstration Notices, concerning conditions in countries where Americans may be planning to visit or reside.

The Country Specific Information is a report on many aspects of life in the country, such as immigration requirements, health and security information.

A Travel Warning recommends that U.S. citizens defer or reconsider travel to a country due to a protracted situation that is dangerous or unstable.  A Travel Warning is also issued when the U.S. Government's ability to assist U.S. citizens is constrained due to a drawdown or closure at an embassy or consulate, even if the underlying condition is expected to be of limited duration.  A Travel Warning must be issued whenever a post goes to authorized or ordered departure status.

A Travel Alert disseminates information about short-term conditions, generally within a particular country, that pose imminent risks to the security of U.S. citizens.  Natural disasters, terrorist attacks, coups, anniversaries of terrorist events, election-related demonstrations or violence, and high-profile events such as international conferences or regional sports events are examples of conditions that might generate a Travel Alert.

An American Citizen Message (formerly known as Warden Message) is issued by embassies and consulates abroad and is an integral part of the Consular Information Program.  Post often issues American Citizen Messages about routine topics, such as voting and taxes.  Post also issue American Citizen Messages to provide timely and important safety and security information to American citizens living or traveling in their districts.  American Citizen Messages relating to safety and security are sent if a perceived threat is deemed BY THE DEPARTMENT to be specific, credible, and non-counterable, and in order to comply with our “no-double standard” policy.  American Citizen Messages relating to safety and security MUST be cleared by the Department in all but life and limb emergencies.

A Demonstration Message provides the latest information and security guidance in Bolivia.
