About the U.S. Military Group

The U.S. Military Group serves as the United States Defense Representative and conducts security cooperation activities to build positive relationships with the Government of Bolivia, develop Bolivian Security Forces capabilities, and promote the exchange of information.  This strategic mission is supported by the four areas listed below. 

Humanitarian Assistance
Humanitarian Assistance

The U.S. Military Group La Paz conducts Humanitarian Assistance Programs in order to foster conditions necessary for economic, and social development, increase the Bolivian security forces’ capability to respond to humanitarian aid requirements, and generate positive public relations and goodwill.

Transformation and Modernization

The U.S. Military Group La Paz provides training and equipment that contribute to the Bolivian security forces’ professionalism, ability to conduct counterterrorism operations, and increase interoperability with U.S. and international forces.

Peace Keeping:

The U.S Military Group La Paz provides training, equipment, and support to enhance Bolivian security forces’ capability to conduct international peace keeping operations.

 

U.S.  Military Group Activities in Bolivia

The primary focus of the U.S. Military Group is to coordinate security issues with the Government of Bolivia and its security forces, Humanitarian assistance and activities are also key priorities.  In fiscal year 2007, the U.S. Military Group contributed over US$9 million in assistance, focusing on humanitarian projects. 

 

Medical Readiness Exercises
Medical Readiness Exercises

The U.S. Military Group regularly brings military doctors, dentists, and eye doctors to remote areas of Bolivia to participate in Medical Readiness exercises.  In 2007, the U.S. Military Group carried out seven Medical Readiness exercises that treated nearly 22,000 Bolivians.  Five Medical Readiness programs are scheduled for 2008, in Montero, Los Yungas, Tarija, Rio Mamore and Riberalta.  The program has been an integral part of the U.S. Military Group’s role in Bolivia since 1996.

Disaster Preparedness

The U.S. Military Group actively engages with Bolivian civil defense authorities to improve disaster preparedness and emergency response capabilities.  Recent efforts include assistance in creating a national emergency operations center and operations manual.  The U.S. Military Group also provides extensive logistical support for Bolivian emergency response activities, as well as facilitating regular disaster training exercises and seminars.  

Engineering Projects

In fiscal year 2007, the U.S. Military Group funded fourteen construction projects in support of various humanitarian projects throughout Bolivia.  U.S. Military funded projects, ranging from medical clinics to water storage/treatment facilities, totaled over US$2.5 million in fiscal year 2007.

International Military Education and Training

The U.S. Military Group funded over US$1.2 million in security forces training in the United States and Bolivia, including special emphasis on counter-terrorism and human rights.
