U.S. Government and Bolivian Chamber of Industry present Guidelines to Promote Cleaner Industrial Production
La Paz, June 13, 2007 - As a result of a cooperative effort between the U.S. Government and the Bolivian National Chamber of Industry two new guidelines will be officially presented to promote clean production procedures, pollution prevention and industrial safety in the wood and textile sectors.
The Guidelines for Cleaner Production, Industrial Safety and Occupational Health emphasize the concepts of producing “more and better with less” by looking for opportunities to save resources in all stages of production. The guidelines describe more efficient uses of raw materials and supplies through practical and simple measures.
This project is part of an overall support program provided by the U.S. Government to develop Bolivian industrial and exporting potential, which aims to create direct and sustainable benefits for workers and their families.
The guidelines for the wood sector outline best practices for wood sawing and furniture manufacture. These procedures include steam pipe insulation, sawdust extraction, fuel substitution, wood recycling for board making, noise reduction, and solvent recovery. The guidelines for the textile industry include measures to optimize spinning mill operations, fabric production, as well as garment manufacture and finishing. The document outlines and recommends special procedures for fiber washing, water and fabric recycling, garment washing improvements, and fuel substitution. Activities under the Cleaner Production Program further increase Bolivian industry productivity and competitiveness.
This project is part of a program of U.S. cooperation to Bolivia estimated at more than $110 million per year. This cooperation is provided to create better living conditions for Bolivians, to develop economic opportunities and greater incomes, as well as to support social inclusion and citizen participation processes.
